Harmony Montgomery’s stepmother released from prison

Kayla Montgomery, the stepmother of Harmony Montgomery who served as a key witness in the trial and eventual conviction of her husband and Harmony’s father, Adam Montgomery, for the 5-year-old’s murder in 2019, was released from prison this week, the New Hampshire Department of Corrections told MassLive.

Kayla Montgomery was granted parole in March after serving prison time for perjury, according to the department.

She was arrested by Manchester Police in June 2022, the same month she told investigators Harmony was murdered by her father, according to court documents. Adam Montgomery wanted her to lie about where Harmony was on several occasions, “basically giving Kayla a ‘cover story’ and telling her that as long as she stuck to the cover story everything would be OK,” the documents said.

Adam Montgomery was sentenced to 56 years to life in prison earlier this month for Harmony’s murder and the disposal of her body, which has not been found.

He beat and killed Harmony on Dec. 7, 2019, while the family was living in their Chrysler Sebring. Harmony had several bathroom accidents in the car and Montgomery yelled and hit her in the head, according to prosecutors.

Montgomery admitted to two of the lesser charges in the case on Feb. 7: falsifying physical evidence and abuse of a corpse. Montgomery did not appear in court during his trial, nor was he present when the jury delivered the verdict.

Harmony was living with her mother when she was born in 2014, but shortly after Harmony was placed in a foster home. By 2018, Harmony was in Adam Montgomery’s custody and she lived with him and his wife Kayla Montgomery. Adam Montgomery is believed to have taken a U-Haul van around the Boston area and prosecutors think he dumped her body around the Revere/Saugus area.
