A 65-year-old Cambridge man who vanished during a hiking trip in New Hampshire’s White Mountains last month was found dead in a river Monday morning, according to multiple reports.
William Donovan went missing on April 16, and his body was found around 10:30 a.m. on Monday in the Dry River, roughly 400 feet from where officials found gear and a jacket they believe belonged to the man, WCVB-TV reported, citing New Hampshire Fish & Game. Donovan’s body was stuck underneath a large boulder that required fish and game officials to call in additional resources and tools to move.
Search team members carrying Donovan’s body made their way down to Route 302 around 6:40 p.m., the station reported.
Late last month, Donovan’s car was found in a parking lot at the base of a path with hiking equipment inside officials said would have been beneficial if he were planning a hike in the White Mountains. Donovan appeared to be an avid hiker, according to New Hampshire Fish and Game.
Cambridge police conducted a welfare check at the man’s home, where they found a handwritten note indicating his desire to hike Mt. Jefferson and Mt. Adams. The area between the parking lot and Mt. Adams is “huge and vast with several hiking trails and miles of dense forest,” Fish and Game officials said.
An autopsy of Donovan’s body will be conducted by the New Hampshire State Medical Examiner, according to Patch.
