Bruins forward not complaining about too many men penalty in Game 2

BOSTON — It looked as if the Bruins were going to get a power play just 3:33 in the third period of Game 2 in their first-round series against the Toronto Maple Leafs. But after Ryan Reaves was sent to the box for holding Morgan Geekie, the officials also penalized Boston for having too many on the ice.

Geekie, who was being prevented by Reaves from getting to the Boston bench, was the one-too-many-forward for the Bruins and Boston served matching penalties with Toronto. It wasn’t a turning point in the game, but it was a questionable call given the fact Geekie was being prevented from getting off the ice.

“We had too many guys (on the ice),” Geekie said after the Bruins’ 3-2 loss. “I was trying to get off. (Reaves) had my stick. I mean, I get what he was doing. I was trying to get off. I mean, they called what they called. It is what it is.”

The Bruins had a lot of momentum in the first period, which included a power-play goal by Geekie to get the scoring started. Boston was playing smart hockey, but things shifted in the final 40 minutes and the home team couldn’t quite get back into a groove.

Geekie believes the Bruins had enough urgency throughout points of the game, but knows they need to put together a full 60 minutes if they want to beat a tough Maple Leafs team.

“They played a solid game. It’s tough to digest now,” Geekie said. “… They put more on the board than we did. … We’re just gonna come in and prepare for things tomorrow, go over what we need to clean up and be ready to go.”

The series, now tied at 1-1, shifts to Toronto for Games 3 and 4 beginning Wednesday night at 7 p.m. EST.
