Marathoner pounds pavement to make wishes come true for sick kids

EAST LONGMEADOW — When Mia Vatrano sent out word on Instagram and Facebook that she was raising money for Make-A-Wish Massachusetts by running in this year’s Boston Marathon, the mother of a girl named Mia — with a critical illness — reached out to her to express her thanks. She also made a donation.

“She said her daughter just got her wish, and they’re going to Disneyworld,” said the 36-year-old runner from East Longmeadow. “I’m hearing people’s stories, what they’re going through, and it’s so sad. That’s my motivation.”

Make-A-Wish grants wishes to children who face life-threatening medical conditions. The organization has made dreams come true for over 10,000 children in Massachusetts and Rhode Island since the organization was founded 40 years ago.
