David Pastrnak thought he missed his chance. The Bruins forward, who was playing for Team McDavid in the NHL’s 3-on-3 All-Star Tournament, looked like he might have a breakaway on Bruins teammate Jeremy Swayman late in the opening game of the event.
But Sidney Crosby recovered to thwart Pastrnak.

“I wanted to score on him so bad. I was going to try everything I can. I had a breakaway. I was hoping Sid was going to let me go, but he kind of backchecked me on that one,” Pastrnak said smiling. “I was a little worried that that was my chance.”
But with his own goalie pulled and with Team McDavid down 3-1 late, Pastrnak got another chance. He took a pass from Connor McDavid just inside the right faceoff circle and ripped it by Swayman.
“I don’t know if he let me score that. He knows I shoot there on him in practice,” Pastrnak said. “It seemed too easy. It seemed way too open. In the shootout, he knows all my moves so I did a little (Jake DeBrusk) move. It was fun.”
Swayman tipped his cap to his teammate.
“He’s got a couple go-to moves. I thought he was going to go glove side,” Swayman said. “He pulled a Jake DeBrusk on me. It was a good move. I was pleasantly surprised.”
Pastrnak beat Swayman again in the shootout to clinch the Team McDavid win.
“Him and I work on that quite a bit. I can’t believe he got me tonight,” Swayman said. “I got him on a breakaway during the game. So he evened it out. It’s fun. It’s awesome to see him having success.”
Despite beating Swayman, Pastrnak didn’t leave Toronto at the top of the Bruins’ trash-talk food chain. That honor belonged to coach Jim Montgomery, who coached the Team Matthews, which won the event.
“I’m going to have bragging rights over Pasta and I’m not going to let him live it down,” Montgomery said.
