While the sports world waits for Jerry Jones’ verdict when it comes to head coach Mike McCarthy, there’s a growing fascination over the possibility that Bill Belichick could be the answer in Dallas.
McCarthy is on thin ice after another one-and-done in the post-season, following regular season success. The Green Bay Packers embarrassed Jones’ team in Dallas, where the Cowboys were previously unbeaten this season.
The Cowboys became the first team in league history to win 12 games in three straight seasons and fail to make the conference championship game in any of them.
The expectation is that Jones will move on from McCarthy after the latest fiasco, but until that time, the rumor mill is on overdrive.
Former Patriot Ted Johnson, who appeared as a guest on the “Eye on Foxborough” podcast, believes a Belichick-Jones marriage has the potential for greatness.
“I would say 25 years ago, no way (it would work),” said Johnson. “But, I think both men are probably willing to concede certain things. I just can’t imagine Bill is really going to be obsessed with having all the power. He’s got three, maybe four or five years left to coach. And I just can’t imagine he wants to do all the work to flush out a whole new front office, and bring in people and implement your theories and ideologies. I can see Bill, at this point saying, ‘I’m okay with it,’ not having that personnel power.
“I don’t know what it is, I just think it’s a good fit,” Johnson went on. “I can see him there. I see both sides kind of saying, ‘Hey, we’re going to put all of our stuff aside, all our petty stuff that’s maybe bogged us down in the past, and be inclusive, and collaborative, and not worry about that, and see if we can win a Super Bowl. Because, that’s the best thing for both parties … winning another Super Bowl would help their legacies tremendously.”
Jones has been at the helm for three Super Bowl wins, but the last one came in 1995. So there’s been a considerable drought. As for Belichick, he’s been the head coach for six championship teams, but none of them have come without Tom Brady at quarterback.
“So I think they kind of realize that at this point,” Johnson said with regard to their respective legacies. “If they don’t, shame on them. But my feeling is, they would and concessions will be made. I think he can work there … that’s the team I’d love to see Belichick go to. I would love to see him go there.”
Johnson believes Belichick needs to ask several questions, and the answers to those questions should guide him.
“Do you want to win? Do you want to pass (Don) Shula? Do you want to correct the trajectory your legacy is on?” Johnson said, asking the relevant Belichick questions. “Then put all of that other stuff you used to care so much about aside, and then just go coach this team and see what happens.”
