Westfield utility inks nuclear agreement with offshore wind’s future in question

WESTFIELD — At a Municipal Light Board meeting on Wednesday, Westfield Gas & Electric discussed state decarbonization goals and recent ventures by the company to meet them.

Senior quantitative energy analyst Keziah Bednarsky said the municipally owned utility’s goal is to have 50% of its power come from non-carbon-emitting sources by 2030, and 100% by 2050.

Bednarsky delivered bad news about renewable power from wind. Three offshore wind farms off the coast of Massachusetts have been canceled, she said. One was abandoned after beginning construction.
