A vigil was held in Bridgewater Sunday for a beloved nurse from Whitman whose body was found in a Boston Logan Airport parking garage last Wednesday.
Hundreds filled a church for Margaret “Maggie” Mbitu on Nov. 5, NBC10 Boston reported. The 31-year-old woman was found dead inside a car inside the central parking garage at Logan Airport around 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, according to Massachusetts State Police.
A video posted to Facebook showed attendees releasing balloons and lighting candles around a photo of Mbitu who was reported missing by her family last Monday, according to a GoFundMe campaign.
“Maggie was adored by many and it’s impossible to describe the impact she had on everyone during her lifetime or quantify the number of lives she touched,” the GoFundMe reads. “She was a kind, selfless, compassionate nurse that was loved by many.”
The 31-year-old was last seen leaving her job at BAMSI in Halifax, where she worked as a nurse helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities for more than a decade, WBZ-TV reported. State police said they had been investigating Mbitu’s case as a missing person.
“The BAMSI community is heartbroken by the tragic murder of Maggie Mbitu,” the company wrote on Facebook. “She was warm, caring and loved by everyone she worked with, both staff and the people she cared for in our group homes. As an agency, we are in mourning over the loss of such an amazing young woman.”
Friends and family of Mbitu gathered to remember the nurse during the Sunday vigil while authorities search for her suspected killer.
“We just need justice for Maggie,” Mbitu’s cousin Rosemary Ndungu told NBC10 Boston. “We want this guy arrested as soon as possible so that we know the process of justice is beginning so that our healing can start.”
Authorities have obtained a warrant charging 40-year-old Kevin Kangethe, of Lowell, with Mbitu’s killing. The two are believed to know each other, state police said.
Kangethe is believed to have boarded a flight to Kenya. Massachusetts State Police are working with Kenyan authorities to find him. Meanwhile, people can donate to the GoFundMe by clicking here.
