The summer season might be over — but you can now look forward to a smoother ride to Cape Cod.
Repair work on the Bourne Bridge, one of the two major bridges leading to the Cape, has been completed more than two weeks ahead of schedule, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ New England District office.
All the travel lanes on the bridge, along with the sidewalk, are now open, the Corps said in a post to X on Friday. The contractor handling the work is expected to return on Sunday to “complete permanent line striping and remove all the temporary road signage,” the Corps said in its post.
Lane restrictions on the bridge had been in place since mid-September, leaving just one lane in each direction. That snarled traffic — particularly during rush hour, the Cape Cod Times reported.
In a subsequent post, the Corps thanked “everyone for their patience during this critical repair work that’s needed to maintain the structural integrity of the Bourne Bridge, a vital component to the transportation system of Cape Cod, the Islands and southeastern Massachusetts. Safe travels.”
The work on the bridge included repairing its steel supports and concrete abutments. Crews also did maintenance on drainage system and the bridge’s lighting the Cape Cod Times reported.
