The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to throw away Gills Onions products after 73 people fell ill after consuming them.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 15 of those people were hospitalized. The people who fell ill after eating the onions spanned 22 states.

The reason these people fell ill was likely due to Salmonella poisoning, according to the CDC.
The following products were subject to recall:
- Diced yellow onions (3-pound bags and 8-ounce cups)
- Diced celery and onions (8-ounce cups)
- Diced mirepoix (10-ounce cups)
- Diced red onions (8-ounce cups)
If you happen to have one of these recalled onion products, the CDC is warning consumers to check their refrigerators and freezers before using the onions.
The sell-by dates for these yellow onions was between Aug. 8-28, 2023. They were sold to select stores and restaurants across the U.S. and Canada.
If you happen to find onions with the sell-by dates in your possession, the CDC is warning people to throw them away or return them to their place of purchase.
The agency is also urging people to “wash items and surfaces” that may have come into contact with the contaminated onions using hot water with soap or in the dishwasher. Call your healthcare provider if you begin to experience symptoms of sever Salmonella poisoning.
This is not the first time a massive onion recall of this scope has come up over the past few years.
In 2021, the FDA urged people to throw away onions from multiple sources, including from the popular meal kit Hello Fresh.
