A ‘winding’ road to justice for Annamarie Cochrane Rintala (Editorial)

Next week in Hampshire Superior Court, the question shifts from whether Cara Rintala killed her wife in their Granby home in 2010 to the punishment she will receive.

This case was unusual from the start and got more so. Annamarie Cochrane Rintala died six years after Massachusetts legalized same-sex marriage, a fact that drew national interest to her death. Last Friday, the jury selected to try Cara Rintala for a fourth time – making her only the second defendant in Massachusetts to be prosecuted that many times – found her guilty of voluntary manslaughter.
