Patriots get key CB back for Saints game, OT that has started is scratched

FOXBOROUGH — After being sidelined for three weeks with an ankle injury, Jonathan Jones will be back patrolling the Patriots secondary on Sunday afternoon.

The key cornerback is active for a date with the Saints, as is JC Jackson, who was reacquired earlier this week. New England’s defensive backfield will look markedly different than it did last weekend in Dallas, where Shaun Wade and Myles Bryant finished the game manning the boundary cornerback spots.

Calvin Anderson, who opened the season as Bill Belichick’s starting right tackle, is now a healthy scratch following the return of Riley Reiff. Tyrone Wheatley Jr. and Kayshon Boutte are also healthy scratches once again, while Matthew Judon (bicep), Cole Strange (knee), and Will Grier (emergency quarterback) round out New England’s inactive list. Earlier this week, Bill Belichick was asked whether Grier is competing with Bailey Zappe for the backup gig.

“I think we just take it week by week here, and I think before you can really, realistically, get in there and play, you’ve got to have a pretty good command and understanding of the offense, play calling, be able to let the other 10 people do their jobs,” Belichick said. “Will’s sharp and he’s picking things up pretty quickly. I mean, if we had an emergency and we had to put him in there, I think, yeah, we could try to get him ready. But, I mean, the other two guys are just further along at this point.”

Unsurprisingly, Saints quarterback Derek Carr — who was listed as questionable — is going to play.
