After getting pulled by Bill Belichick in the third quarter of Sunday’s blowout loss to Dallas, Patriots quarterback Mac Jones had a message for his replacement, Bailey Zappe.
During his weekly appearance on WEEI’s “Jones & Mego” show, Jones was asked what he said to Zappe, as cameras picked up the two having an exchange prior to the backup entering the game.

Jones first explained that he and Zappe, who aren’t perceived as having the best relationship, “always” talk on the sidelines. In that situation, though, handing Zappe the baton in such a lopsided game, the Patriots starter offered a piece of advice for his backup.
“Just go out and sling it,” Jones said he told Zappe. “At the end of the day, we were down by a lot, so it’s a tough position.”
The “sling it” line has historical context, because that’s exactly what Drew Bledsoe told Tom Brady prior to the final drive of Super Bowl XXXVI against the Rams.
While then offensive coordinator Charlie Weis told Brady to take care of the ball, Bledsoe turned to Brady and said: “(Expletive) that. Go out there and sling it.”
Brady, of course, obliged, moving the ball downfield to set up Adam Vinatieri’s game-winning field goal as the Patriots on their first of six Super Bowl titles.
As for Zappe, he had no chance of bringing the Patriots back from 31-3, which is the score he inherited, so there wasn’t much he could do. Jones had played arguably his worst game as a Patriot, turning the ball over three times, leading to 18 points scored by the Cowboys.
Zappe only attempted nine passes, completing four for 57 yards.
How did Jones think Zappe played?
“Good,” he answered.
