About 40 people worked together to save two horses who were stuck in the mud in New England for more than seven hours on Saturday.
The horses had wondered almost a mile into the woods in a swampy area on a farm in Lebanon, Conn., according to the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department. The horses then got stuck in the mud and water.
About 40 people then used ropes, wood, saws, plywood, rescue equipment, vet supplies, food and water to help rescue the horses. Officials shared photos from the rescue.
“The goal was to roll the horses out of the mud, which was waist deep for rescuers, onto their sled device,” the fire department said. “Once on the sled, all personnel would work together to pull them over the make shift bridge and up onto flat ground approx. 30 yards from the swamp.”
They were about to get the first horse out. But the second horse was “considerably more stuck in the mud than the first,” according to officials.
After five hours, the team got both horses to safety.
Both the horses were in “mild distress” after being stuck for more than seven hours. But eventually both horses “were happily eating some fresh hay.”
