Three teen boys are facing criminal charges after a daytime shooting in Cambridge Monday afternoon, authorities said.
Around 2:15 p.m., a Cambridge police officer was handling an unrelated call for service on School Street when they heard what they thought were gunshots from Bishop Allen Drive, Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said.
The officer called for backup and tried to intervene as they saw several suspects flee the area, the district attorney said.
“As additional officers arrived to assist, evidence was located confirming that multiple shots were fired,“ the district attorney said.
After speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from the area, police identified the three teen boys as the suspects, the district attorney said.
Police searched the Cambridge home of one of the suspects, which gave way to more evidence, including a 30-round capacity magazine and ammunition, the district attorney said. This evidence linked the suspects to the shooting, she added.
The boys were arraigned in juvenile court. They were charged with the following:
- A 17-year-old Cambridge boy has been arraigned and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a firearm without a license and possessing a firearm and ammunition without a license. He was also charged with possession of a large-capacity magazine and ammunition.
- A 14-year-old Boston boy has been arraigned on a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon.
- A 15-year-old Framingham boy has been arraigned on a charge of accessory after the fact. He was also charged with assault and battery on a police officer.
“Gun violence, particularly violence involving youth, has been an ongoing concern and a top priority for the Cambridge Police Department,” Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow said in a statement. “Our department is deeply committed to aggressively investigating and mitigating such harmful activity in our community. I am grateful for the work of our officers, detectives and support personnel who, in partnership with the District Attorney’s Office, were able to quickly identify and bring charges against those believed to have been responsible for this troubling act of violence.”
