3 people displaced on Christmas Eve after home furnace catches fire

Three people were uninjured but displaced from their home on Christmas Eve after their furnace caught fire, authorities said.

Randolph firefighters were called Tuesday night around 7:15 p.m. to 15 Highland Glen Drive, where they found smoke billowing from the front door of the single-family home, city Fire Chief Ronald Cassford said in a statement. In the home’s basement, they found the furnace on fire.

The firefighters extinguished the flames in minutes, but the home was damaged by smoke and water. Without a working furnace, the residents were also left without heat.

The three people are now receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, Cassford said.

An initial investigation pointed to a malfunction with the furnace sparking the flames, though firefighters had yet to determine the official cause of the fire.

“I wish to commend our firefighters, working on Christmas Eve, who quickly responded and extinguished this fire, preventing further damage to the home,” Cassford said.

Christmas and Christmas Eve are among the most common days of the year for housefires.

Another fire early Wednesday morning — Christmas Day — in Acushnet, killed a man and a woman, both believed to be in their 80s.
