After days of above-normal temperatures that have soared into the high 40s, winter weather is set to return to Massachusetts, as the state could see snowfall late Wednesday into Thursday morning.
National Weather Service forecasters project 1 to 3 inches of snow falling in higher elevations, with a coating to an inch for areas north of the Massachusetts Turnpike. A map published by the weather service shows areas east and south of Interstate 95, like Boston and much of Plymouth County, will likely avoid the snow altogether.
The Berkshires and Worcester Hills could also see a brief period of freezing rain, complicating the morning commute. For the rest of the state, the precipitation is likely to switch from snow to rain.
The rain should taper off Thursday afternoon, and temperatures are expected to climb back into the 40s, with the chance to crack 50 in the southeastern part of the state.
Another round of precipitation is expected Friday night into Saturday morning, with snow falling to start then changing to rain.
