23-year-old faces charges after a shooting at basketball courts in Mass.

A 23-year-old man is facing a number of charges in connection with a shooting near Donnelly Field in Cambridge last week that injured two people, police announced Tuesday.

Yonayvia Cruceta, of Cambridge, is charged with assault and battery attempt with a firearm, carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds, discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building, carrying a loaded firearm without a license, and carrying a firearm without a license, police said in a statement. Police did not say when Cruceta would be arraigned.

Police were alerted to multiple gunshots at Donnelly Field in Cambridge just before 9:40 p.m. on May 23. Police determined Cruceta was at the basketball court at the field when he was approached by two people. After a brief interaction, they exchanged gunfire, according to police.

Cruceta was shot and is also accused of shooting at the other people, Cambridge police said.

A 22-year-old woman was struck by a stray bullet, police said. But it is unclear who fired the shot.

Both Cruceta and the woman sustained non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Cambridge police do not believe the shooting was random and called for anyone with information about the incident to contact investigators at 617-349-9151 or online.

In the wake of the shooting, city officials are set to host a community safety meeting on Thursday at St. Anthony’s Parish.

“This is an opportunity for the Cambridge Police to share what we can with the community, for residents to ask questions and share concerns, and for everyone to come together to determine what steps must be taken to decrease opportunities for violence in our city,” police wrote.
