HOLYOKE — Call it an appetizer for this city’s celebrated St. Patrick’s Parade.
The annual St. Patrick’s Road Race is as much a part of Holyoke’s Irish tradition as the annual parade, which kicks off Sunday, March 23, at 11:10 a.m.
On Saturday, the 48th annual road race attracted 6,500 runners and walkers, either for the 10K race or the two-mile walk. Thousands lined the streets.
The men’s race was won by Samuel Whittaker with a time of 31:24.8 and the women’s race was won by Angelia Rafter with a time of 34:14.1.
The parade begins at the Kmart Plaza on Northampton Street (Route 5). The parade is 2.65 miles long and can take up to three hours.
