2 people hospitalized after fire at Mass. Holiday Inn

Two people were taken to the hospital after a fire at the Holiday Inn in Somerville Thursday.

At about 1:20 p.m., the fire department was dispatched to the Holiday Inn at 30 Washington St. Smoke had been reported on the 9th floor.

By the time firefighters arrived, there was heavy black smoke with no visibility on the 9th floor. A second alarm was called to bring in further assistance from Boston and Cambridge. The hotel was also evacuated.

“Because of the thick smoke, firefighters used thermal imaging cameras to search for occupants on the 9th floor,” officials said in a press release.

One man became trapped in his room and had to break a window to yell for help. He was also located by firefighters and led to safety.

However, two people were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries believed to be non-life threatening.

The fire was contained to one room on the 9th floor thanks to the building’s sprinkler system, the Somerville Fire Department said. But the entire floor has heavy smoke and water damage. Other floors also had water damage.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Somerville Fire Investigation Unit and Somerville Police. It is believed to be accidental.
