A 16-year-old was extradited to Massachusetts on Wednesday to face murder charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a teenager in Springfield last month, police said.
The 16-year-old’s name was not released due to his age. Massachusetts law requires all teenagers older than 14 to be tried as adults for murder.
The shooting took place around 12:35 am. on Nursery Street in Springfield on Oct. 19. Arriving officers found 19-year-old Matthew Chaney with several gunshot wounds. Chaney died of his injuries at the scene, Springfield Police said in a statement.
On Oct. 28, police were granted an arrest warrant for the 16-year-old on murder charges. At around 1:30 p.m. on Nov. 1, the teen was found and arrested at a home in Manchester, New Hampshire, police said.
On Wednesday, the teen was brought from Manchester to Springfield.
An investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
