10-birdie barrage propels South Korean golfer to top of FM Championship leaderboard

NORTON — Haeran Ryu went into Day 2 at the FM Championship 3-under along with seven other golfers. But she emerged as the leader after an incredible second round when she shot a 10-under at TPC Boston.

Ryu birdied on four straight holes — 10 total holes on the day —and just missed a fifth straight on the 18th. The 23-year-old went bogey-free, too. Her total score after two rounds is 62, good for 13-under.

“Just an amazing day because my shots — everything next to the hole and my putt — everything (went) in the hole,” she said after her round on Friday.

Despite having a strong first round, Ryu didn’t think a 10-under was even possible because of the size of TPC Boston’s greens and the fact the course conditions were firm — a condition Ryu actually likes playing on.

“I love that condition because my shot is really accurate,” she said. “So I love this course. This green is so clear so I just trust my stroke and made so many birdies today.”

Three golfers followed Ryu with a 7-under including Robyn Choi, Yealimi Noh and Bianca Pagdanganan. Jin Young Ko and Lauren Coughling were tied for fifth after shooting 6-under and Celine Borge and Jeeno Thitikul finished tied for seventh shooting 5-under.

Three golfers go into Day 3 tied for ninth at 4-under, including Thursday’s Day 1 leader, Marina Alex.

Megan Khang finished 3-under after the first round and 1-under after Friday’s round. She’s now 3-under for the tournament. And while the Rockland native said her scorecard was a “rollercoaster,” she was happy with how she was able to bounce back after a tough start.

“I was very happy. You know, kind of start off with a bogey today and then go back-to-back birdie, birdie. It felt like a trend,” she said. “Every time I bogeyed, I birdied the next two. … I may have gotten a little frustrated on holes 3 and 4, but there is plenty of golf left. I knew coming in there were some gettable holes and just kind of keep giving myself chances. Instead of focusing on the bogeys I made I had to change the mindset to be like, ‘I hit some really good shots to make the birdies I did make on my front nine.’”

Round 3 begins on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. EST.
