BOSTON — James Paxton was happy in Los Angeles. He enjoyed being on the West Coast, close to his home in British Columbia. Being part of the Dodgers virtually guaranteed he was going to the postseason.
Then came the news last Monday that he was being designated for assignment. That was disappointing, of course, but he soon learned that he was most likely headed to the Red Sox, which softened the blow. After all, Paxton had spent the previous two seasons with the Red Sox and considered re-signing as a free agent last winter before choosing southern California for geographical reasons.
