New England Patriots picked for NFL’s ‘unique’ new alternate uniform experiment

The New England Patriots will be getting a new alternate jerseys this season as part of the NFL’s new program.

Nike announced Tuesday that the NFL is kicking off “Rivalries,” a program in which teams will wear special uniforms for select home games against rivals.

An important note for Patriots fans: The new “Rivalries” jerseys will be added in addition to existing alternate uniforms. That means the red throwback “Pat Patriot” jerseys will not be affected by the new look.

The uniforms and jerseys themselves have yet to be revealed. Nike says they will be unveiled “prior to the first rivalry game.”

When is the first “rivalry game?” Nike says that it will be announced after the NFL’s big schedule unveiling next month.

The concept sounds similar to the City Connect jerseys that have gained traction in the NBA and MLB. Nike described the new gear as a “unique” uniform “rooted extensively in local community insights.”

According to Nike, the Rivalries uniforms will join a team’s jersey rotation for three years after their initial release.

The only teams selected to participate in the program out of the gate are those in the AFC East and NFC West. Additional teams will be added to the program each of the following years.
