A corrections officer was charged with assaulting a former inmate at the Barnstable County jail earlier this year, prosecutors announced Friday.
Gregory Djaoen, 38, of New Bedford, was arrested by Massachusetts State Police over accusations he assaulted a person who was previously incarcerated at the Barnstable County Correctional Facility in May, Cape and Islands District Attorney Robert J. Galibois’ office said in a statement.
Troopers in the State Police Detective Unit were notified around 5:15 p.m. Sunday of a possible assault and battery at the jail. Investigators were told a person who was previously incarcerated at the facility reported being assaulted by Djaoen, a deputy corrections officer at the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office, on May 25 and May 26, according to the district attorney’s office’s statement.
There is security video that helped with the investigation, the statement said.
The charges stem from an investigation led by the State Police Detective Unit, according to the district attorney’s office.
Djaoen is expected to be arraigned in Falmouth District Court on Monday on one count of assault, two counts of assault and battery, one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and one count of intimidation of a witness, the district attorney’s office said.
The district attorney contacted New Bedford Police Chief Paul Oliveira to request Djaoen’s license to carry a gun “be immediately and indefinitely suspended in light of the charges,” the statement added.
