New responsibility ‘meant a lot’ to Patriots leader

FOXBOROUGH — For years, the opening coin toss was Matthew Slater’s domain.

With the long-time special teams captain now retired, the Patriots sent a pair of players out for the toss in Thursday’s preseason opener. The first wasn’t a surprise: David Andrews. The seven-time captain is the longest-tenured player on offense and has long been a vocal leader. But the second player was a bit unexpected. Safety Kyle Dugger joined Andrews as they walked out to midfield together.
