MONTEREY PARK, Calif. — Authorities are investigating a deadly explosion at a Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department training facility that killed at least three deputies, KABC reported.

The blast occurred just before 7:30 a.m. on July 18 at the LASD’s Biscailuz Center Training Academy, also known as the Sheriff’s Enforcement Bureau compound in Monterey Park. The facility houses LASD’s special enforcement units and bomb squad.

According to preliminary information, the explosion happened while personnel were handling explosives.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the scene. Officials have not confirmed whether any additional injuries occurred.

In a statement, L.A. County Supervisor Kathryn Barger expressed condolences to those affected.

“I am heartbroken to hear of the terrible tragedy that has unfolded today at an L.A. County Sheriff’s Department facility,” Barger said. “…My heart is heavy, and my thoughts are with the brave men and women of the Sheriff’s Department during this difficult time. We stand with them and their families as they navigate the hours and days ahead.”

Attorney General Pam Bondi said federal agents are at the scene to investigate. No further details have been released.
